Pune: The Central Railway has earned Rs 224.96 crore by selling scrap under its ‘Zero Scrap Mission’ in last ten months. The scrap included unusable rails, permanent-way materials, broken coaches, wagons and locomotives.

The ‘Zero Scrap Mission’ was launched by the Materials Management Department of Central Railway to keep each division, workshop and shed in Central Railway free from scrap materials.

During the FY 2019-20, the Railways had sold 55,057 metric tonnes of scrap materials, generating revenue of Rs 321.46 crore. Prompt sale of scrap metal not only generates revenue for the Railways, but also provides additional space for other works.

The Material Management Department played a vital role in ensuring availability of spares and consumables required for operations and maintenance of loco holdings for freight and parcel trains, transporting essential goods across the country during Covid-19 pandemic. The department was also instrumental in purchasing the critical items such as PPE kits, N-95 masks, gloves, sanitizers among others for frontline staff by floating tenders within a short duration.
