Maharashtra: Following rift within family, Baba Amte’s granddaughter Dr Sheetal Amte dies by suicide in Chandrapur

Chandrapur: Dr Sheetal Vikas Amte-Karajgi, granddaughter of internationally acclaimed social worker Baba Amte and Trustee and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Maharogi Sewa Samiti at Anandvan died by suicide at Chandrapur on Monday (November 30).

Doctors at the Varora hospital declared her dead upon arrival when she was taken to the hospital. Sources said she injected herself with some poisonous injection.

Dr Sheetal had recently levelled allegations against the Maharogi Sewa Samiti about irregularities in the organisation and had blame the trust management and her family. The video making these serious allegations was posted from her social media accounts which was then taken down within two hours.

Dr Sheetal’s father Dr Vikas Amte and his brother Dr Prakash Amte had issued a joint statement on November 24 denying all the allegations levelled by Sheetal about the irregularities in the Maharogi Sewa Samiti under which all charitable institutions and activities are carried out.

The Samiti is the parent trust which runs the Anandvan, Lok Biradari Project and other charitable projects. Dr Sheetal was the CEO of the trust, while her father and uncle is the secretary of the trust.

The Samiti had released a statement dated November 22 to media organisations denying all the allegations levelled by Dr Sheetal. The letter released on November 24, had signatures of Dr Vikas Amte, his wife Dr Bharati, Dr Prakash Amte and his wife Dr Mandakini Amte.
