Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has claimed that the letter written by then Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar – who is also founder and president of the NCP – has been misquoted by the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on the backdrop of the ongoing farmers(Sharad Pawar) protest against the new farm laws.

Pawar, in his letter written to Chief Ministers of all states during the UPA era, had asked them to make appropriate amendments in the APMC Act in their respective states. Following this row, NCP state spokesperson Mahesh Tapase said that BJP was spreading the misconception that Sharad Pawar is in support of new agriculture laws. Sharad Pawar himself answered the question asked regarding the viral letter.

Sharad Pawar met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh in Delhi. He later clarified to the reporters that he had met regarding Purandar airport. And he clarified that he would not speak on the farmer’s agitation.

“There should be an APMC Act. I had said in this letter that there is a need to amend the APMC Act. There is nothing wrong with that. However, the three agriculture bills of the central government do not show the benefit of the Agricultural Produce Market Committee. Therefore, there is a plan to divert this issue by quoting my letter and there is no need to give more importance to it, ” explained Sharad Pawar while addressing a question regarding the viral letter. Also, if my letter had been read properly, his time would have been saved, said Pawar.

NCP’s explanation

Model APMC-2003 was introduced by the Vajpayee government. Many chief ministers in the country had not implemented the APMC Act. After the UPA government came to power, Sharad Pawar was given the responsibility of Agriculture Minister. There are good things to be done by eliminating the flaws in the law, which many state governments have discussed positively with everyone with the intention of enforcing them. From that point of view, Sharad Pawar wrote letters to various Chief Ministers and many Chief Ministers of the states amended the law and implemented it. Whose advantage was taken by all the farmers until yesterday, Mahesh Tapase said.

Ravi Shankar Prasad criticizes Pawar

“Congress had said in its 2014 manifesto that the APMC Act would be repealed. Also, Rahul Gandhi had called a meeting of the chief ministers of the Congress-ruled states in 2013. In this meeting, Rahul Gandhi had said that the agricultural market committees should be gone. However, when he was the Union Agriculture Minister, he had written letters to several Chief Ministers to amend the APMC Act, stating that farmers should have the right to sell their produce at any time”, said Ravi Shankar Prasad. Now, they are standing against the government and they have forgotten their manifesto. Ravi Shankar Prasad also accused the opposition of playing a double role.
