Western UP : 626 crore dues on 12 sugar mills, 1.25 million farmers waiting for payments

Meerut: The sugar mills of Baghpat are getting ready for the new crushing season, but still the dues now the last crushing season are yet not b fully paid. The 12 sugar mills of Western UP owes Rs 626 crore 48 lakh to the farmers of the district.

So far only 52.68 percent payment has reached the account of farmers. Apparently, these sugar milks still need to clear half of the the dues to be paid to farmers. Due to Coronavirus period, farmers are facing economic problems, they will get relief if the outstanding payments are made.

One lakh 24 thousand 264 farmers of the district have supplied sugarcane to these 12 sugar mills. Farmers say they are facing difficulties due to non-payment. The farmers supplied 412 lakh quintal of sugarcane to the mills.

The farmers have suffered three way, one due to the lockdown, two untimely rains which damaged thousands of hectares of the crop and third is distress due to the non-payment of dues by the sugar mills.

According to officials, there are 119 sugar mills here in the state which crush around 70 lakh quintal cane per day. Around 46 lakh farmers supply their produce to these units.
