New Delhi : BJP has named Syed Zafar Islam as its candidate for the by-election for one seat of Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. The by-election is to be held on September 11 in the Rajya Sabha seat, vacated after the death of former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh. A statement issued by the BJP on Wednesday said that the party’s Central Election Committee has approved the name of Zafar Islam for the by-election for a Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.

Zafar Islam is the spokesperson of the BJP. Islam played a major role in bringing former Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to the BJP, destabilizing the Congress government led by Kamal Nath in Madhya Pradesh. Amar Singh died on August 1 in a hospital in Singapore due to kidney disease. His term as a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh was till July 2022.
