TV actress, husband arrested for cheating man under pretext of providing IPS officer post

Mumbai: Crime branch officials of the Mumbai Police on Sunday booked a television actress and her husband in connection with a case of fraud registered in Punjab’s Jalandhar. The arrested couple- Sapana Ralhan, 28, and her husband Puneet K Ralhan, 26 had allegedly cheated a man for Rs 3.5 crore after promising him to get an appointment as an IPS officer. The duo had also assured him that they would get him posted in Jalandhar.

The Punjab Police’s anti-fraud unit investigated the case, contacted Mumbai Police, following which the crime branch carried out a raid at the couple’s apartment in the city’s Oshiwara locality and arrested them. Thereafter, Punjab Police obtained their transit remand and took them to Jalandhar, inspector Vinay Ghorpude said.

Sapna, who has starred in a few TV shows, and her husband were booked by Jalandhar Police for cheating, breach of trust and criminal conspiracy, following a complaint by the victim. During the investigation, it revealed that the duo had defrauded a couple of times but giving fake appointment letters of the Union Ministry of Defence and the National Police Academy to the victim. A Jalandhar magistrate issued a non-bailable warrant against the husband-wife duo, but the police failed to record their arrest.

HC pulls up police for failing to take action
Thereafter, the complainant approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking action against the accused. The HC pulled up the police for not being able to take action against the couple. Subsequently, Jalandhar police commissioned a special team which found that the couple was residing in Mumbai. Then, the Jalandhar Police contacted Mumbai Police and got the couple arrested.
