Pune: More than 24 hours later, NDRF recovers dead bodies of two youths drowned in Mutha river
Pune: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel managed to recover two dead bodies of the youth who were drowned in Mutha river water near the Baba Bhide bridge on Friday (October 16) evening. The deceased youth were trying to take selfie pictures while huge volumes of water had been released into the river basin from Khadakwasla dam due to the heavy rains in the catchment area as well as the city.
The deceased youth have been identified as Saurabh Kamble (19), a resident of Tadiwala road and Omkar Tupdhar (18). Their dead bodies were found near the Nana-Nani Ghat of Mutha river near Narayan Peth and Sangam Bridge.
According to eyewitnesses, Saurabh and Omkar along with their third friend had gone to Baba Bhide bridge on Friday evening. Saurabh and Omkar had entered the river water and were trying to take selfie pictures. At that time, Omkar got carried away due to heavy current of water. Saurabh tried to save him but he himself also got carried away with the water.
The third person present at the spot and some nearby citizens informed fire brigade and Deccan police about the incident.
Deccan police station personnel and fire brigade officials rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident.
Despite the fire brigade personnels efforts to locate Saurabh and Omkar, they could not be traced. Finally, the NDRF team was brought on Saturday to search for the two youngsters. NDRF personnel managed to recover the two dead bodies at the Nana-Nani Ghat and Sangam bridge.
Heavy rains had lashed the city and adjoining areas from Wednesday evening onward. As a result, the water resources department was forced to released water from the Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river basin. Due to this, the water levels in the riverbed area near Baba Bhide bridge had increased.
