Pune Indapur: Flamingos arrive at Ujani dam back waters in Bhigwan

Pune: Almost two months late, Flamingos along with the Bar-headed Geese from Mongolia, have finally arrived at the Ujani dam back waters in Bhigwan area of Indapur tehsil last week. The migratory birds were spotted recently at Diksal, Kumbhargaon, Takrarwadi areas. At present the number of flamingos and geese is less, but it will increase in the coming days.

The Ujani back waters, about 140 kilometres away from Pune city on the Pune-Solapur highway, attracts migratory birds and geese. They stay in the area for a period of five to six months typically between November-December to April-May.

Since Flamingos are mud waders and they need enough ground to land, this year their arrival has been delayed due to the large volume of water retained in Ujani irrigation project constructed on Bhima river.

The Ujani back waters have emerged as a popular tourist destination during the winter season. Puneites and citizens from other cities flock to the area between December to March to watch these migratory birds. Varieties of ducks, herons, egrets, raptors and waders are also spotted here.
