New Delhi : NAFED has identified bidders for importing 15,000 tonnes of onions and import orders have also been issued. Onions are being imported to control the rising prices of onions.
Imported onions will be supplied from NAFED to port cities. NAFED has appealed to the states to register their needs. NAFED plans to issue regular tenders for additional supply of onions. A senior official said NAFED’s tenders for onion supply at Tuticorin and Mumbai ports have received a good response. NAFED immediately approved the tenders by evening. NAFED is trying to make onions available in the market on time.
In issuing the tender, NAFED has insisted on the choice of Indian consumers. Indian consumers prefer medium sized onions. Foreign imported onions are usually larger than 80 mm. Such onions will not be imported this year. Such a condition has been laid down in the tender. Last year, MMTC imported yellow, pink and red onions from Turkey and Egypt. The size of this onion was large. So it didn’t get a customer.
