Mumbai : The price of onion has gone up to Rs 40-70 per kg in the Mumbai Agricultural Produce Market Committee on Monday and is being sold at Rs 60-80 per kg in the retail market. Prices in the retail market are expected to touch 100 soon.
Due to depletion of summer onion stocks and delay in arrival of new crops, there is a shortage of onions all over the country. Market prices are rising as revenue falls short of demand. On Monday, 705 tonnes of onions arrived at the Mumbai Bazar Samiti and were selling at Rs 40-70 in the wholesale market.
Onion prices are also rising sharply in the retail market. Medium quality onion is being sold at Rs. 60 and good quality onion at Rs. 80 per kg. At present, onions are arriving in Mumbai from Nashik, Pune and Ahmednagar. Prices in Mumbai are also rising day by day due to increase in prices in productive districts.
There is a shortage of onions everywhere. The prices of available onions have gone up due to the arrival of new crops and if the situation remains the same, the retail market is likely to cross 100 onions by Dussehra.
