Pune MNS demands action against speeding heavy vehicles on 'accident-prone' Katraj New Tunnel to Navale Bridge road

Pune: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has threatened to launch an agitation if preventive security measures are not implemented on the stretch between Katraj New Tunnel and Navale bridge. MNS has also demanded that the entire stretch should be declared as an ‘accident prone zone’ and consistent action by police against speeding vehicles using a speed gun.

MNS city unit secretary Yogesh Khaire accompanied by Santosh Patil, Ganesh Naikawade, Rahul Gawali, Mangesh Jadhav and other party workers met Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Rahul Shrirame and submitted a memorandum of their demands.

The delegation also sought explanation about the preventive measures undertaken by traffic police and also gave a few suggestions for reducing the accidents and fatalities on the stretch.

The Katraj New Tunnel to Navale bridge road has a steep slope over the entire stretch. As a result, drivers – especially of heavy vehicles – lose control over their vehicles and cause accidents near the Navale bridge which is surrounded by a high density of population.

On Monday (January 11), six accidents were reported on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass of the Pune-Bangalore highway within a span of seven hours from early morning. Three persons were killed and at least 16 persons sustained injuries in the multiple accidents. Of the six mishaps, five have taken place on the accident-prone patch of 600 metres of the bypass road at Narhe.
