Pune: Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawalla on Thursday evening clarified that “no lives were lost or major injuries were reported due to the fire at one of the unit of the company. Poonawalla issued this clarification through a tweet made by him on his official twitter handle.

A major fire broke out Terminal Gate 1 of the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Pune on Thursday. The Serum Institute of India is the manufacturer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID vaccine – COVISHIELD.

Poonawalla on his Twitter handle has said, “Thank you everyone for your concern and prayers. So far the most important thing is that there have been no lives lost or major injuries due to the fire, despite a few floors being destroyed.”

COVISHIELD vaccine against novel coronavirus is being manufactured by the pharma giant in Pune. According to report, the production of COVISHIELD was not being carried out at the SII building where fire broke out at around 2 pm. Ten fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the fire.
