Chakan: Cop asks to reverse vehicle for easing traffic flow, truck drivers beat him with rods

Pune: A traffic police constable posted at the Talegaon-Chakan chowk was beaten up with a rod by two truck drivers on Saturday (January 30) afternoon 2.30 pm. The incident took place after the cop reportedly asked the truck drivers to reverse their vehicle for easing the traffic flow at the junction.

Ravindra Namdev Karvande (30), posted at the Chakan Traffic Division of Pimpri-Chinchwad police has received injuries in the attack. He has been admitted to Unicare Hospital at Talegaon-Chakan road.

The truck drivers have been arrested. They were identified as Rohit Babu Salvi (20) and Harshdeep Bharat Kamble (22), both residing at Kalyan in Thane. They have been booked under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty), 333 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The suspects were arrested by the Unit III team led by Police Inspector Shankar Babar of the Crime Branch of Pimpri Chinchwad police. Police checked CCTV camera footage from Chakan-Talegaon chowk to Mhalunge to trace the suspects. The duo was finally nabbed from Kharabwadi area.

During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they hit the cop as he had asked them to take their truck in reverse direction. A verbal spat had occurred during that time. The suspects then came on a motorcycle and hit the traffic police personnel with a rod.
