Some respite to Puneites as recovery rate crosses 96 per cent mark

Pune: Efforts of health officials, frontline workers, government agencies and people at large in combating Covid-19 is paying off as Pune is witnessing a decline in death rate. Even the number of reported cases has gone down considerably in the district.

“Since past few months, there has been a dip in the mortality rate due to coronavirus,” the health officials said. The district which once saw the death rate of 11 per cent currently stands at 2 per cent.

Health officials attributed the rise in recoveries in Pune district to elaborate steps initiated to detect symptomatic patients at an early stage. Due to all-out efforts, the recovery rate in Pune district has crossed 96 per cent.

In a bid to ensure enough beds for patients, the civic body had set up a 1,114-bed jumbo facility in Shivajinagar and Baner. The health administration also permitted patients with no symptoms or mild symptoms to be in-home isolation. The health department also took steps to identify co-morbid patients, who were in the high-risk category and extremely vulnerable to the virus.

The first death due to the contagion in Pune was reported on March 30 last year, while the nation-wide lockdown was imposed on March 24. Till April 11, 2020, the death rate had reached 11.4 per cent. The upward trend continued during the period of June-August last year. However, it declined gradually and currently, the mortality rate stands at two per cent.

Pune city on Saturday reported zero death amid COVID-19. The city reported zero death after 11 months since the beginning of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Dr Pradeep Awate, State Surveillance Officer, has appealed to all to exercise all cautions despite a dip in new cases.

“The COVID-19 infection is not completely vanished. It will persist. New strains of this virus have been reported in England, Brazil and other countries, thus one must stay alert and follow all COVID-19 protocols,” Dr Awate said.
