Pune - Poll guidelines to be issued in a week for cooperative housing societies with less than 250 members; 15000 such societies in district

Pune: State cooperative minister Balasaheb Patil has said that the guidelines and rules for conducting elections of management committees of cooperative housing societies with less than 250 members will be released within a week, followed by which the societies can immediately conduct elections.

  • Total Cooperative Housing Societies in state – About 1 lakh
  • Societies with less than 250 members – 80 thousand
  • Societies in Pune district – 18 thousand
  • Societies with less than 250 members in Pune district – 15 thousand

The state government had stayed the elections of cooperative housing societies till December 31, 2020. After the deadline got over, the state election commission decided to conduct elections for housing societies. However, societies with less than 250 members were excluded from the decision.

The state government is drafting rules and guidelines about conducting elections in such societies with less than 250 members. Since the government officials were busy in implementing the loan-waiver decision of the state government, they were unable to release these rules and guidelines before the deadline lapsed. In view of the COVID19 outbreak the elections were also postponed for three months.

Cooperative Housing Societies have played an important role during the COVID19 pandemic and controlling the spread of the coronavirus. However, some management committee members of several societies who were unwilling to continue the work or were disgruntled over some issues, could not shed their responsibilities. Other members who were willing to take the responsibilities also could not do so.
