Pune: Sonit Sisolekar from Paradise English Medium School bags Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2021

Pune: Sonit Sisolekar, a 13-year-old scholar and young volcanologist, studying in class 8 of Paradise English Medium School has been awarded the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2021. Sonit turns 14 today (January 26) as he celebrates his birthday along with this momentous occasion.

Sonit has interest in the subject of geology and studying and understanding volcanoes. Two years back, the young lad bagged NASA’s ‘Cubes in Space’ tournament for his project to understand the method of ionisation of radiation that gave red colour to Mars.

He also won gold and bronze medals at the Indian National Science and Engineer Fair for studying the effect of sound relating to the growth of trees. Sonit loves to explore hills around Pune region situated on the Deccan Plateau.

Sonit’s father Dr Santosh Sisolekar said, “Sonit is currently researching the Terrestrial Tube on the Deccan Plateau. He has submitted a research paper in which he has compared Terrestrial tube volcanoes on Earth and the Moon. He will participate in Lunar Planetary Science Conference which is scheduled to be conducted in March.”
