Deccanexpress : Most of us while surfing the internet or watching HD videos don’t even realize that our smartphones are emitting carbon which degrades our mother earth. With the advent of the Reliance Jio 4G network, the price of data has dropped in India. Our country enjoys the cheapest data in the world. Streaming high-definition (HD) movies, shows, series, and music has become a common practice. Online streaming has completely swept away conventional mediums like watching television.

According to research done by scientists at the prestigious Royal Society in the UK, HD video streaming on a Smartphone generates about eight times more emissions than standard definition (SD). The reports show that the digital sector’s estimated contribution to global emissions from 1.4 per cent to 5.9 per cent of the global total.

Manufacturing of Phones, laptops, tablets, and smart TVs generates carbon; it is a carbon-intensive process. An individual can play their part in saving mother earth, by just using their phones for four years instead of two, the contribution is halved, keeping a phone for two years means that the carbon emission used in manufacturing represents half of all the emissions it will generate throughout its lifetime.

Another way to save the mother earth is to turn off their screens while streaming music if they’re just listening and not watching. These small steps could help save up to 5% of the carbon emission from streaming videos.
