Pune: The Ministry of Defense on Tuesday (December 8) approved in-principle to transfer 2.5 acres of land under the control of the Air Force at Lohegaon Airport to the Airport Authority for the transport( Lohegaon Airport) and expansion plan. This decision will help large scale movement of freight at Lohegaon Airport.

The decision was taken at a meeting in New Delhi in presence of MP Girish Bapat, along with Secretary of Defence, Ajay Kumar. Bapat said, “Since Lohegaon Airport does not have a cargo centre with no room for it, it becomes a compulsion to be dependent on the insufficient space of the Air Force and the Authority. As a result, there are limitations on freight transportation. The Air Force gave a green signal to give 2.5 acres of land at Lohegaon Airport to the airport authority in exchange for a building in Chandigarh.”

He further added, “The Serum Institute will produce a large number of corona vaccines. Hence special facilities will be created at Lohegaon airport to speed up the vaccination process both across the country and abroad. I have stressed on the urgent need for 2.5 acres of the air force space.”
