Pune: Renowned Marathi ghazal writer Ilahi Jamadar passes away

Pune: Renowned Ghazal writer Ilahi Jamadar passed away due to prolonged illness on Sunday (January 31). He was 75 years old. He was revered as the best ghazal writer in Marathi after noted poet and ‘Ghazal Samrat’ Suresh Bhat.

Jamadar was born on March 1, 1946 at Dudh Gaon in Sangli, the western region of Maharashtra. He was associated with Doordarshan and All India Radio (Aakashwani). Jamadar also used to conduct the ‘Ghazal Clinic’, a workshop for upcoming Marathi poets.

The famous qawwali ‘Ae Sanam’ composed by Kaushal Inamdar and featured on actor Makarand Anaspure- which was the prime attraction of film Ranga Patanga – was originally a ghazal written by Jamadar.

Jamadar had suffered a slip and fall injury and damage to his brain in July 2020. He was since then admitted to the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for treatment. He was suffering from dementia.
