Solapur : Ranjitsinh Disale first Indian to win Global Teacher Award; receives $1 mn prize money

Solapur: Ranjitsinh Disale, becomes the first teacher from India to win the Global Teacher Award this year. Disale won the award for his efforts to promote girls’ education and for the work done in the field of education through QR coded books.

He has been chosen for the coveted $ 1 million Global Teacher Prize 2020, which is awarded by the London-based Varkey Foundation.

Ranjitsinh Disale, a 32-year-old teacher from Paritewadi village in Maharashtra’s Solapur district emerged the winner out of the nominations of 12,000 teachers from 140 countries around the world.

Disale who won 7 crore prize money announced that fifty percent of the total prize money will be given to 9 finalists, which will provide quality education to thousands of children in 9 countries.

Disale told media, “Teachers are the real change-makers who are changing the lives of their students with a mixture of chalk and challenges. They always believe in giving and sharing. And, therefore, I am very pleased to announce that I will share 50% of the prize money equally among my fellow top 10 finalists to support their incredible work. I believe, together, we can change this world because sharing is growing.”

Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari has congratulated Ranjitsinh Disale on begin the first Indian to win the Global Teacher Prize 2020.

Congratulating Disale, Maharashtra’s governor said, “Disale’s work of generating interest about education among children from rural areas, through innovative ideas and use of technology are commendable and worthy of emulation by others.”
