Gandhinagar : With the onset of winter season, onion prices are now on the rise along with vegetables. The Gandhinagar District Supply Authority has fixed a storage limit of onions till December 31, under which wholesalers in the district will be able to store up to 25 metric tonnes and retailers up to 2 metric tonnes. Traders who violate the order will be prosecuted. It remains to be seen whether setting this limit will stop the onion black market.

Winter has begun amid the transition to the corona. Plenty of supply of vegetables remains available during this season. But at present the prices of vegetables are rising steadily. Not only that, the prices of onions, which are essential in daily life, are also going up and onions are being sold in the markets of Gandhinagar at Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg.

The Gandhinagar district supply body has also issued an order following instructions from the state’s civil supply department, while giving guidelines on the rise in prices of onions despite the supply. As onion has been included in the License, Control and Stock Declaration Order 181, the list of district supply systems states that the storage limit of onion has been fixed. Under this, the wholesale traders of onions in the district will be able to store up to two metric tonnes of onions as the wholesalers of onions will be able to store it up to a maximum of 25 metric tonnes.

All the traders of the district have also been instructed to be vigilant in this regard. Legal action will also be taken against them if the collection is increased and onions are black marketed. It remains to be seen whether the price of onion will go up or down after the decision of the system.
