Pune: Ashok Jagirdar, son of veteran artist Gajanan Jagirdar, handed over 130 photographs and other memorabilia – sketches and writings, from his personal collection to the National Film Archives of India (NFAI) on Monday (December 14).
The collection was received by Prakash Magdum, Director of NFAI. One of the highlights from the recent acquisition was an original sketch drawn by Bal Thackeray of one of the characters played by Jagirdar.
Another highlight from Gajanan Jagirdar’s personal collection was Jagirdar’s look as Lokmanya Tilak. This Prabhat film, based on the life of the Indian nationalist, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, was never made.
Gajanan Jagirdar was a veteran Indian film director, screenwriter, and actor. He was appointed as the first Director of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He was also associated with Prabhat Film Company for three decades.
Three of the eight films made in the first year of Marathi cinema were made by Prabhat Film Company. Every Prabhat film had some highlight which gave the film an edge over the others in the market.
