Mumbai: A 62-year-old woman hailing from Panvel declared brain dead has given life to 4 people ailing from serious illness. The woman was brought to a private hospital at Belapur in Navi Mumbai on September 26 in a critical condition.

The woman was diagnosed with intra cranial hemorrhage and in spite of all the treatment and efforts, she did not respond to the treatment and was declared brain dead on September 29, the hospital said in a release on Wednesday. Doctors treating the woman counselled her family members following which they agreed to donate her organs.

The doctors then harvested liver, kidneys and lung from the deceased woman as donor. The liver was transplanted to a 39-year-old man from Kolhapur, who was suffering from an end stage liver disease, the Apollo Hospitals said the statement. The woman’s kidneys were transplanted to two patients from Navi Mumbai. For lungs, Maharashtra has no suitable recipient, then it was donated in Chennai to a recipient ailing from lung problem through the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre.

A ‘green corridor’ was subsequently created and the organ was transported from the hospital to Mumbai airport, covering a distance of 30 km in 38 minutes, and then flown in a flight to Chennai. The hospital thanked the woman’s family for donating her organs and giving a new lease of life to four patients.

Earlier, 41-year-old brain-dead patient donated organs to State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization in Surat, Gujarat. Gondia’s Radheshyam Rahangdale, donated organs of his six-year-old daughter Rivyani and gifted life to six people, was also felicitated on the occasion. India performs the second largest number of transplants in the world, next only to USA. National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) shows that Maharashtra has been the most significant contributor in leading India to second position.
