Dubai: The former captain of Indian cricket team Sunil Gavaskar was criticized over his statement on Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma during the commentary on Thursday. He had referred to the couple playing cricket in their apartment during the lockdown while speaking on the batting practice of the RCB skipper. However, few words were misquoted on social media and Gavaskar had to face the criticism. It faced criticism not only from cricket fans but also from Anushka Sharma.
It was intensified when Anushka took to Instagram to react on Gavaskar’s comment. She bashed him for dragging her name in his commentary. In her long statement on her Instagram story, Anushka asked the reason for dragging her name and felt that people are unnecessarily taking her name during a cricket match.
Sunil Gavaskar clarified while speaking to media that he never blamed her for Virat Kohli’s failures. He also stated he was just talking about a video of them playing in their apartment while also pointing out that he was just discussing about Virat’s batting practice during the lockdown.
He exclaimed “Where am I blaming her? Where am I being sexist in this? I am just stating what was seen in the video which was maybe recorded by somebody in the neighboring buildings and then put up. Virat also had no practice and the only practice that they had was when they were seen them playing in their building compound and Anushk was throwing ball to him”.
“Where am I blaming her for Virat’s failures? I am only saying that the video said that she was bowling to Virat,” Sunil Gavaskar said. Explaining his views further on the matter, the cricketer-turned-commentator also stated that he is the one who has always batted for wives going on a tour with their cricketer husbands and reiterated that he has not blamed Anushka at all in his comments.
Gavaskar pointed out “You know me, I am the one who has always batted for wives going with husbands on tour.” “Because after their working hours are over, they have to get back to their wives like every other common man does. So I am not blaming her,” Sunil Gavaskar further added
Anushka Sharma wrote a detailed note on Instagram, she said, “Mr. Sunil Gavaskar, I want to tell you that your statement is quite distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on wife of accusing her husband’s game? I am sure over years who may have respected the private lives of othe cricketers while commentating on game. Do you think you should have equal amount of respect for me and us?”
