Pune: In view of the reduced number of COVID19 cases and serious patients, the district administration has decided to keep the Shivajinagar Jumbo Hospital facilities like ventilated and oxygenated beds on a standby mode. The administration has decided to cut down the operation costs and hence new patients will be admitted to Naidu and other civic hospitals for COVID treatment. In future if need arises, the facilities at the Shivajinagar jumbo hospital will be revived with adequate human resource allocation.

The jumbo hospital in the Pimpri-Chinchwad city will remain operational. Patients from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad and rural areas of the district are being admitted to this jumbo hospital facility.

At present, there are 137 patients undergoing treatment at the jumbo hospital setup on the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) ground at Shivajinagar. These patients will continue to receive treatment at the same facility however, newer patients will be asked to be admitted to Naidu hospital, Baner Covid Care Centre and other civic hospitals.

The administration had initially decided to reduce the number of hospital beds in the jumbo facility to cut down on the operational cost, however it has now decided to keep the entire facility on standby. The jumbo hospital has a capacity of total 800 hospital beds including 200 ventilated and oxygenated beds.

· Total number of hospital beds – 800

· Total expenditure on jumbo facility – Rs 105 crore

· Patients undergoing treatment as on December 30 – 137

The jumbo facility was setup within 15 days in August month earlier this year as the number of COVID19 cases in the city were increasing exponentially. On an average, 800 to 1000 new cases were being reported during the peak of coronavirus disease outbreak in the city. Now, this daily average number of fresh COVID19 cases has come down to 100 to 150 only. The number of patients requiring ventilated beds and oxygenated beds has also drastically decreased.

Pune Divisional Commissioner Saurabh Rao said, “The jumbo hospital was setup to offer COVID19 treatment to patients for six months in the first phase. This phase has got over and the number of patients has also decreased. Hence in order to cut down on the human resources cost, we have decided to stop admitting new patients in the Shivajinagar jumbo facility from January 1, 2021.”

Pune Municipal Corporation Deputy Health Chief Dr Sanjeev Vavare said, “Considering the present number of COVID19 cases in the city, the facilities at the PMC hospitals, Naidu hospital, Baner Covid Care Centre, Laygude and Dalvi hospital are adequate. We have adequate human resources for these faciltiies.”
